Behavioral health is a discipline that focuses on mental and physical well-being, with treatment for acute and chronic conditions that both prevent and treat illness. It includes services provided by mental health professionals, psychiatrists, neurologists and physicians.

Behavioral health patients are regularly seen in emergency departments, often waiting for days for a bed in an inpatient facility.

Behavioral Health encompasses a wide range of conditions, such as substance use disorders, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders. These are caused by social, psychological, biochemical, genetic, or other factors.

The care of behavioral health patients in the emergency department is complicated by the lack of diagnostic tests to guide their treatment, and the fact that many do not have adequate facilities to provide proper care. The following resources have been developed for emergency nurses who wish to improve their ability to deliver treatment for this patient population.
