Florida joined the Union in 1845 as the 27th state, nicknamed the “Sunshine State,” and is known for its mild climate and natural beauty. Until the mid-20th century, Florida was the least populous state in the southern United States. Subsequently, Florida belonged to Spain and England at different times, until Spain finally sold it to the United States in 1819. The University of Central Florida was ranked No. 1, Florida International University was ranked No. 4, the University of Florida was ranked No. 5, and the University of South Florida was ranked the No. 8 university in the United States. This didn’t last long: New settlers from the United States began to arrive, and in 1821 Spain ceded Florida to the United States in exchange for Spanish rule over Texas.
With a population of over 21 million, Florida is the third most populous and the 22nd largest of the 50 United States. Containing 1.5 million acres of sawdust, swamps, mangroves, hardwood hammocks, and wetlands, the Florida Everglades is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Based on income, property, and other state and local taxes, the research organization Tax Foundation ranks Florida among the states with the lowest taxes (Florida ranked fifth out of 50 states in 2013; only four states have a lower tax burden). Florida is one of the largest states east of the Mississippi River, with only Alaska and Michigan having a large body of water.
