New Hampshire is located in the New England region in the far northeast corner of the country. It is bordered by the Canadian province of Quebec to the north, Maine and 25 kilometers of the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Massachusetts to the south, and Vermont to the west. The capital is Concord, located in the south-central part of the state. The Granite State of New Hampshire is known to be a study of contrasts.

Since the end of the 19th century, it has been among the half-dozen most industrialized states of the Union, but it is often referred to as agricultural and pastoral. Vermont and New Hampshire supposedly constitute a “Yanke Kingdom” dominated by white Anglo-Saxon Protestants, but the state has large populations of French-Canadian, German, Italian, Polish, and other non-British origins. Its political reputation is business-friendly and conservative, but the largest domestic source of public funds is corporate income tax; in addition, the state was one of the first to legalize civil partnerships for same-sex couples.

The territorial division of New Hampshire is so clear that many have suggested that it be divided into three equal parts, with Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts roughly equal. Despite these contrasts, the nation has developed a unique identity. Underlying this status is the government’s image of frugality: New Hampshire has no general sales tax or personal income tax.

Thrift at the state level has strengthened the distribution of responsibility between cities. Although city governments exist in all New England states, in no other state do they have the same authority or responsibility for providing their services as they do in New Hampshire.

Another component of this identity is strict adherence to tradition, and the rocky silhouette of Franken Canyon has long been a vivid symbol of being known as the Old Man of the Mountain; the rocky outcrop collapsed in 2003. A combination of frugality, decentralization, traditionalism, industrialization and racial and geographic diversity make New Hampshire very attractive to many Americans.
