Texas became the 28th state of the Union in 1845. Texas is located in the south-central part of the country and is the largest state by the area outside of Alaska.
The state stretches for nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from north to south, and about the same distance from east to west. Water delineates many of its boundaries.
The meandering course of the Red River makes up the eastern two-thirds of Texas’s border with Oklahoma to the north, while the rest of the northern border is the Panhandle jutting north, forming its counterpart in that state’s western part. The Sabine River forms much of the Louisiana border to the east, where it also shares a land border with Arkansas.
The crescent-shaped coastline of the Gulf of Mexico is in the southeast, while the Rio Grande River separates Texas from Mexico in the southwest. New Mexico is in the west. Austin, located in the south-central part of the state, is the capital.
The sheer size and diversity of Texas are evident in almost every aspect of its physical characteristics, economy, history, and cultural life. The Texas territory was part of the Spanish Empire for over a century. It was then part of the new country of Mexico from 1821 to 1836 when it gained independence and lived a short life as a republic before joining the Union.
The image of Texas was that of a rough and lawless frontier when it gave up its independence to become a state. Although Texans still identify strongly with their cowboy heritage, the image of the state of Texas has changed dramatically over the course of the 20th century; modern-day Texas is known for its vast agricultural wealth, great oil and natural gas production, industry and finance, vast urban centers that foster a cosmopolitan cultural life, and seemingly endless expanses of highland prairie and pasture dedicated to cattle and cotton.
The name of the state comes from the word Caddo thecas, which means “allies” or “friends”. Texas is generally divided into East and West, although the dividing line between the two is ambiguous. However, in general, East Texas has a humid climate, characterized by cotton and ties to the Old South, while West Texas is arid and known for cattle grazing and proximity to the West.

Wharton County Junior College
Wharton County Junior College, established in 1944 and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, features a main campus in Wharton near the Colorado River. The college also maintains satellite campuses in Bay City, Richmond and Sugar Land. WCJC offers a 106-contact hour CNA certification program composed of three parts: lecture/theory, lab and clinicals. Throughout the duration of the lecture/theory and lab portion of the course, students will learn effective communication techniques, interpersonal skills, emergency safety protocol, the Heimlich maneuver, care for the cognitively impaired and more.
Collin College
Founded in 1985, Collin College is a community college which serves the northern and northeastern regions of Dallas. It offers students a 4-credit, 112-contact hour CNA program (NURA 1301 and NURA 1160) which can be completed in as little as seven weeks. The instructors for the course seek to equip future CNAs with the appropriate knowledge, abilities, and skills that are needed to provide adequate care for patients at long-term care centers. NURA 1301 course curriculum includes topics such as safety, observation, resident rights, reporting and more.
El Paso Community College
El Paso Community College (EPCC) was chartered in 1972 and is a public, 2-year college. With its 5 campuses in the El Paso metropolitan area and Hudspeth County, EPCC offers students a nursing assistant certification course that is composed of 240 hours.
Vernon College
Vernon College, established in 1972, serves the communities of twelve campuses in the norther region of Texas. Vernon offers students a 116-hour CNA training course (NURA 1001 and NURA 1060) which can be completed in less than two months. The course seeks to impart the appropriate skills to provide adequate care for patients in long-term care facilities.
