Connecticut was one of the original 13 states and one of the six New England states. Connecticut is located in the northeastern part of the country. It ranks 48th among the 50 US states by total area, but is one of the most densely populated. Located at the center of a large industrial-urban complex along the Atlantic coast, it is bordered by Massachusetts to the north, Rhode Island to the east, Long Island Sound (an arm of the Atlantic Ocean) to the south, and New York to the west.

Hartford, located in the north-central part of the state, is the capital. The state is bordered by Massachusetts to the north, Rhode Island to the east, Long Island Sound (an arm of the Atlantic Ocean) to the south, and New York to the west. It has a humid continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers.

Connecticut is slightly larger than the country of Montenegro. Connecticut is the 29th-largest state in terms of area, and it is the fourth-most densely populated of the 50 states. It is known as the “Constitution State” , the “Nutmeg State”, and other nicknames. The word “Connecticut” originated with the Mohegan word quinnitukqut, meaning “be-mossy-place”. Connecticut’s official nickname is “The Constitution State”, adopted in 1959. It was also the early capital of the Connecticut Colony from 1635 until its dissolution in 1664, so it is one of the oldest states.

Connecticut has very close economic ties with New York City, Los Angeles, and Boston. The state is geographically a part of the New York metropolitan area. Connecticut’s minority populations include Irish Americans, Italians, Polish Americans, European immigrants from many countries, and Hispanics.

In 1798, when Connecticut ratified the United States Constitution to become a State it became known as the “Constitution State”. In 1959, the title was changed to “The Constitution State”.
