CNA Jobs in WV
West Virginia was amalgamated as the 35th state in 1863 and is a relatively small state. It borders Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland, and Virginia to the east, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. The state capital is Charleston. West Virginia lives up to its nickname of the Mountain State in every possible way. With an average elevation of about 1,500 feet (460 meters) above sea level, it is the highest of any US state east of the Mississippi River.
This is a region economically and socially connected with mountain spikes that cross it along and across, and with rivers that surround it from several sides. It originally formed the northwestern portion of Virginia, but its residents defied the state’s 1861 secession agreement, choosing instead to remain in the union. Two years later, a new state was formed in the area, whose citizenship strongly influenced the tradition inspired by the West Virginia motto, “Montani semper libero” (“Highlanders are always free”).
Compared to U.S. national standards and averages, West Virginia is poor in terms of personal income and overall economic development. For decades, the rich coal deposits that underlie West Virginia have made it one of the leading producers of bituminous coal in North America. The gnarled terrain has long blocked the people of West Virginia in their small communities in narrow valleys and created both literal and symbolic barriers to the people of the outside world.
After World War II, large numbers of the state left West Virginia for places that offered more jobs. The 1970s marked a brief turning point in immigration during the decade’s energy crisis and ensuing coal boom. Since the 1980s, the decline in population due to coal reserves and heavy industry has been partially offset by an influx of urban professionals and retirees into poor areas in the east. West Virginians have turned to develop strategies such as education and telecommunications to create a more modern socioeconomic environment in their state.
