LPN Jobs in IL
Illinois extends south for 385 miles (620 km) from the Wisconsin border in the north to Cairo in the south. In addition to Wisconsin, the state is bordered by Lake Michigan to the northeast, Indiana to the east, Kentucky to the southeast, Missouri to the west, and Iowa to the northwest. Illinois was named after the Indians of Illinois.
The capital is Springfield in the Midwest of the state. Illinois, admitted as the union’s 21st member on December 3, 1818, is located in the so-called old industrial belt and the country’s fertile agricultural center. Chicago is one of the most important cities in the United States, and its presence creates a stark difference between the predominantly urban and suburban population of the northeastern part of the state and the more balanced urban and rural population of the lower state. In political life, Illinois is divided into Cook County (which includes most of the Chicago metropolitan area) and “downstate,” which is all other counties, even north of Cook, such as Lake County.
Further contrasts arise from the racial and ethnic complexity of the population. These internal divisions, while not unique to Illinois, may have been exacerbated by the state’s critical role in the nation’s economic and political life.
Rich in coal and oil reserves and ideally located for the procurement of raw materials and the distribution of finished products, Illinois ranks among the top states in terms of export value, agricultural income, and value-added manufacturing. Chicago is a national rail hub, the city’s O’Hare International Airport is one of the busiest in the world, and Illinois’ highways and waterways are filled with commercial traffic. Politically, Illinois tends to be a “shaky state” whose votes often reflect fluctuating social tensions that underlie growing but unevenly distributed economic prosperity.
