The rivers define Kentucky’s boundaries, except to the south, where it borders Tennessee in an almost straight line of approximately 425 miles (685 km), and to the southeast, where it shares a rough, mountainous border with Virginia. The Tag and Big Sandy Rivers, flowing primarily to the northwest, separate Kentucky from West Virginia to the east and northeast.
To the north, Kentucky’s border runs along the Ohio River to the Mississippi, meeting Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois along the way. The Mississippi then borders most of the state’s western border with Missouri and Arkansas until it meets one of those states’ northern borders, after which the line continues east into Tennessee.
The capital of Kentucky is Frankfurt, located on the Kentucky River in central Kentucky; its largest city is Louisville in Ohio Falls. The main rivers of the state flow westward, forming parts of its borders. The Kentucky River flows south from its source in the Appalachians in southwestern Virginia to the Ohio River near Carrollton. The tow fork, part of the Big Sandy Ditch system, flows west through eastern Kentucky to join Ohio at Pomeroy.
Western Kentucky flows through the Salt, Tradewater, and Green Rivers into the Mississippi River. Kentucky’s largest inland drainage basin is in its southeastern counties, where several short streams empty into the Tennessee River. In eastern Kentucky, a major drainage divide separates the Ohio-Mississippi watershed from that of the Cumberland River, which flows north from Virginia and West Virginia into the Ohio in Ashland.
