Missouri is a state of the United States of America. To the north lies Iowa; across the Mississippi River to the east, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee; to the south, Arkansas; and to the west, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. With the exception of Tennessee, Missouri has more neighboring states than any other U.S. state. Bisecting the state is the Missouri River, flowing from Kansas City in the west, through the state’s capital, Jefferson City, in the center, to just above St. Louis in the east, where it joins the Mississippi. Missouri was named after, a group of indigenous people who lived there at the time of European encounters.

The state’s present-day constitution was made on January 29th, 1945. It is composed of a preamble and articles. The first article states: “all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, among these life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That all political power is inherent in the people. That government is instituted for their protection, security, and benefit, and they have the right to alter or reform the same whenever the public good may require it.”

The State of Missouri elects two Senators by popular vote at intervals. It has a congress of eleven representatives elected from districts every even year with a president of the United States. Missouri is one of four such states that split their electoral votes between two.


The Missouri General Assembly is the state legislature composed of members elected from senatorial districts for four-year terms. There are 163 representatives and 35 senators in total. It also has the power to override a veto by the Governor with an override vote of two-thirds of each chamber. The state’s highest court is the, with nine judges, which meets in Jefferson City. Missouri has 114 counties and one independent city (St. Louis). Besides common law, Missouri also follows the precedents of the decisions of the to areas where no state precedent exists.
