LPN Jobs in OR
The state of Oregon is located in the western part of the United States. It was originally home to many Native American tribes, most notably the Chinook and Nez Perce. The first European people to arrive in Oregon were Spanish explorers led by Captains Bruno de Heceta and Francisco de Eliza, looking for a water route from California to Asia. They found instead a land rich in natural resources, the Oregon Country, which they claimed for Spain. Later, English and American traders sought furs. The Hudson’s Bay Company established trading posts on the Columbia River at Fort Vancouver (built-in 1825) and the mouth of the Willamette River; however, its control was contested by American settlers. In 1843, the company’s chief factor at Fort Vancouver, Dr. John McLoughlin, built a new fort and gave it the name of “Fort Orford” on the lower river in Southern Oregon.
In 1846, a group of pioneers led by Marcus Whitman established a mission near what is now Walla Walla, Washington. Among them was New York physician Dr. Marcus Whitman, who had traveled west with Rev. Henry Spalding in 1835 to establish what became the Whitman mission in Oregon country among the Cayuse Indians. Whitman’s party proceeded eastward until they were stopped by bad weather. They spent the winter at Fort Hall, built by Nathaniel J. Wyeth’s company of American Fur Company trappers and mountain men in 1834. During that winter, Dr. Whitman met two young native sisters, Narcissa and Eliza Spalding, who had recently lost their father and husband. Neither woman could speak much English, but they were uniquely excited to meet someone with whom they could communicate. In the spring of 1837, the Whitman’s moved to what is now Walla Walla, Washington. During that year, a party of nearly 100 American settlers from Peoria, Illinois, and other points on the Ohio River traveled overland to settle in Oregon Country.
