LPN Jobs in SD

South Dakota became the 40th state of the union on November 2, 1889. The state has two unique physical features: it contains the geographic centre of the United States, which is located just north of Belle Fourche, and it has its continental divide, as a result of which Lake Traverse, in the southeastern corner of the state, flows northward to Hudson Bay, and Big Stone Lake, on the Minnesota border, flows southward to the Gulf of Mexico. South Dakota is bordered by North Dakota to the north, Minnesota and Iowa to the east, Nebraska to the south, and Wyoming and Montana to the west. The state has a total area of 77016 square miles (199,897 square kilometres), which gives it a ranking of 36th in size, compared with other U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

The Black Hills are to the west of South Dakota. The Horseshoe Lake State Park is to be found within the Black Hills National Forest, in Pennington County in western South Dakota. The park offers camping facilities, hiking trails, picnicking spots and fishing opportunities.

The Missouri River flows through South Dakota for approximately 335 miles (539 km). It is joined by the Big Sioux River at Sioux City in northwestern Iowa. The Cheyenne River flows into Missouri at Yankton County in southeastern South Dakota. The James River flows through the southwestern part of the state.

According to 2008 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, South Dakota’s population (estimated at 833,354 people) ranks 44th in the nation; nearly 90% of the population is white and almost 90% of residents are native-born. Over half of residents live in rural areas, and the state has three urban centres: Sioux Falls (population 153,888); Rapid City (74,844) and Pierre (13,646). South Dakota is home to two American Indian reservations: Cheyenne River Indian Reservation (49,863 residents) is located in parts of Dewey and Ziebach counties, and the Rosebud Indian Reservation (21,876) is located in Todd County.
