LPN Jobs in WV
West Virginia was admitted to the union as the 35th state in 1863, it is a relatively small state. It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland, and Virginia to the east, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. The state capital is Charleston.
West Virginia justifies in every way its nickname, the Mountain State. With an average elevation of about 1,500 feet (460 meters) above sea level, it is the highest of any U.S. state east of the Mississippi River. It is a region tied economically and socially to the mountain spines that span its length and breadth and to the rivers that cross or define its boundaries, especially the Ohio River.
As defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission, the border of West Virginia includes all of the state’s 55 counties. The eight counties included in the Northern Panhandle are Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, Preston, Tucker, and most of Wetzel.
West Virginia is rich in history and tradition. Historical events that occurred within its boundaries include the Battle of Fort Henry, the first steamboat trip, the founding of Shepardstown, Stonewall Jackson’s demonstration at Romney during the Civil War, and more recently, some of college basketball’s greatest moments.
West Virginia is also known for its abundant natural resources including coal, petroleum, natural gas, and timber. The capital city has a major role in the cultural and political development of West Virginia. Occupying a location adjacent to the Ohio River, Charleston was founded by an English land company under the direction of Thomas Shepherd in 1794. It became the state capital when West Virginia was admitted to the Union in 1863.
