Medical/Surgical Jobs in TN
Medical-Surgical Nursing is the single largest nursing specialty in the United States and beyond. Medical-Surgical Nurses provide care to adults with a variety of medical issues or who are preparing for/recovering from surgery. They have advanced organizational, prioritization, assessment, communication and leadership skills as they coordinate care among the interprofessional health care team.
Medical-surgical nurses practice in almost every health care setting, including hospitals, outpatient settings, residences, via telemedicine and other non-traditional settings.
Becoming a surgical or perioperative nurse requires 2-5 years of full-time study, depending on the number of credits you can transfer from previous educations, your current nursing education/career, and whether you choose to attend school full-time or part-time.
While most nurses in the med-surg unit have a great deal of freedom, they work with an extensive care team that may be comprised of a primary care physician, an internist, an anesthesiologist, physical therapists, occupational therapists, technicians, and social work. Increased collaboration and communication are essential to patient outcomes in this multidisciplinary model.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 7% increase in jobs in the field of nursing by 2022. Within that field, average pay varies greatly depending on geographic location, facility, and level of education. According to the BLS, average pay for a med-surg RN is approximately $77,000/year as of May 2016.
