Delaware, a state of the United States of America. The first of 13 states to initially ratify the federal constitution, it occupies a small portion of the Boston-Washington, D.C. urban corridor along the Mid-Atlantic coast. It ranks 49th out of the 50 U.S. states by total area and is one of the most densely populated.

The state is divided into three districts – from north to south, New Castle, Kent and Sussex – all founded in 1682. Its population, like its industry, is concentrated in the north, around Wilmington, from where the main coastal highways and railroads pass. Pennsylvania and New Jersey in the north and east to Maryland in the south and west. The rest of the state includes the northeast corner of the Delmarva Peninsula, which Delaware shares with Maryland and Virginia (hence the name). Most state government operations are centered in Dover, the capital.

Historically, geographically, and economically, Delaware has strong ties to Pennsylvania, most notably Philadelphia, where the Delaware River and other transportation arteries direct their trade. Delaware, especially the southern region bordering Maryland’s east coast, was once characteristic of Delaware’s stability and conservatism, and has long had a place in political life, in many ways commensurate with the number of its supporters. Over the years, Delaware has been known as America’s chemical capital, business capital, and credit card capital. Its liberal founding laws and Court of Chancery specialized in dealing with more complex corporate governance and financial issues have led many U.S. and foreign corporations to make Delaware their nominal seat. The state’s large corporations, banks and law firms dominate the northern region.
