Rhode Island is one of the six states of New England. It was one of the original 13 states and one of the smallest. Rhode Island is bordered to the north and east by Massachusetts, to the south by Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound in the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Connecticut. Rhode Island is an archipelago with a total area of approximately 1,545 square miles (4,000 square kilometers).
It is the smallest state in the Union: only about 77 km long and 60 km wide. Rhode Island has three historic counties: Providence County, Newport County, and Washington County. In 1974, part of Washington County was divided to form Kent County.

Rhode Island has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters.

Parts of southern Rhode Island have a subtropical climate, with average annual rainfall exceeding 50 inches (1,270 mm). Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout most of the state throughout the year. However, November is usually the driest month, while February or March can be the wettest. Spring is usually the wettest season, especially in North Rhode Island, where average monthly rainfall exceeds 25 inches (635 mm) from April to June.
