Texas became the 28th state of the Union in 1845. Located in the south-central part of the country, Texas is the largest state in the region outside of Alaska. The state stretches for nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from north to south. And it’s about the same distance from east to west. Water delineates many of its boundaries. The meandering channels of the Red River make up the eastern two-thirds of the northern border between Texas and Oklahoma, while the rest of the northern border of the Panhandle just north to form the western counterpart of the state.
The Sabine River forms most of Louisiana’s western border with Texas, while the Rio Grande forms the rest of the border. The eastern border of Texas is formed by the Gulf of Mexico, giving Texas direct access to the ocean. The southern boundary consists mainly of two straight lines: one drawn from the Rio Grande estuary eastward across the Gulf of Aransas, and the other drawn from the Rio Grande estuary to the south and west. The southwest boundary is formed by a watershed that separates the headwaters of the Rio Grande’s southward flowing streams from the eastward flowing streams to the bay and estuary, as well as Padre Island and the Mustang and Padre Islands, forming the protected Copper. Beach Barrier Bay and Aransas Bay in St. Christie. .The northern boundary is formed by the Red River and the Panhandle, while the northwestern boundary is marked by a common north-south line roughly parallel to the Rio Grande River.
The physical area known as Texas includes not only the state but also parts of neighboring states. To the east is a narrow strip of lowland (Eastern Cross Timber) that separates the prairie of Texas from the prairie of central Oklahoma. The border between Texas and New Mexico extends all the way to the western United States and is basically a straight line extending southeast along or near the 103° west longitude line. In the west, it becomes more and more mountainous until it merges with the plateau and the magnificent mountains of the Sierra Madre (Mexico). A small ledge extending westward into New Mexico is part of Texas.
