Washington is located in the northwest corner of 48 contiguous states, bordered to the north by British Columbia, Canada, to the east by Idaho and Oregon to the south, and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. The capital is Olympia, located at the southern tip of Puget Sound in the western part of the state. The state’s coastal location and prime port allow it to play a leading role in trade with Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific.
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish explorers in the late 18th century who named the area after George Washington. Shortly thereafter, British colonists attempted to establish a settlement but were abandoned as unsuccessful. Among the first government officials in what is now Washington were fur traders of various nationalities, as well as American settlers who later moved west.
Washington was established as a territory in 1853 and a state in 1889, becoming the 42nd state to join the Union. Washington is sometimes referred to as the state of Washington to distinguish it from Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States of America, which is often referred to simply as “Washington”.

1. Seattle University, Seattle
Seattle University's College of Nursing, founded in 1891, welcomes students from every religious background. The college trains them to combine compassion with critical thinking, and emphasizes the pursuit of intellectual excellence as well as service. The school occupies Garrand Hall, which is the building that first housed Seattle University when the school was founded back in 1891. The 19,000-square-foot Clinical Performance Lab is located in Swedish Cherry Hill Medical Center, a few blocks away from the main campus. Here, nursing students get their chance to translate classroom lectures into clinical experiences as they practice starting IVs and respond to health-emergency scenarios using high-fidelity manikins in a simulated hospital environment.
2. Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma
Pacific Lutheran University is a nursing school in WA that offers its students a variety of programs. Students at PLU learn how to function effectively as nursing generalists who are able to rise to whatever challenges come their way. The university, which admits students of all faiths, is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and avows that its mission is to prepare its students for lives of service and inquiry.
3. Washington State University, Spokane
The College of Nursing is dedicated to educating visionary nurse-leaders who will play a central role in improving health care delivery in the 21st century. In 2017, the college received nearly $7 million in research grants from various prestigious science foundations. The college’s research focuses on topics that have a particular impact on families living in the Pacific Northwest such as opioid addiction and rural mental health. Since 2009, the college has occupied a building on WSU Spokane Health Sciences campus, which is located in downtown Spokane. The College of Nursing shares this campus with WSU’s Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, so nursing students have plenty of opportunity to learn how to work collaboratively.
4. Gonzaga University, Spokane
Gonzaga University offers nursing degrees in Washington. This Washington nursing school uses the Complex Adaptive Systems framework as its basic teaching paradigm, which posits that an understanding of individual parts does not necessarily add up to an understanding of the complex whole. In keeping with its Jesuit principles, this nursing school focuses upon servant leadership, social justice and community practice as well as upon the acquisition of top-notch clinical skills. You don’t have to be Roman Catholic to attend this school, however.
5. Seattle Pacific University, Seattle
Seattle Pacific University was founded in 1891 to train missionaries for overseas work, and the university is part of the Christian College Consortium. If you’re interested in making a genuine difference in the lives of the people you’ll encounter as a nurse, SPU’s School of Health Sciences is one of Washington’s top nursing colleges because it’s a school where you’ll learn how to combine clinical skills with caring and empathy. You don’t have to be Christian to attend this school, but education here is taught from a Christian perspective.
