Montana is a huge state, with an area larger than any other place in the US except for Alaska and Texas. It consists of 97 counties and one independent city (Billings).
The Montana-Wyoming border runs across the Continental Divide east of the summit of Granite Peak 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Wisdom. The Continental Divide continues east and south from the summit along the top of the Great Belt Mountains, then along with the current Little Belt range and continues to Loma, Montana in Fergus County, where it turns east and roughly follows the 40 degrees parallel over Lewistown. , the Missouri Valley and Jordan before turning southeast into Yellowstone National Park. From there, it continues south from the southern end of the mountain range into Grand Teton National Park, then along the Teton Range and across Jackson Lake in Wyoming, where it is more or less visible from Togwoti Pass in the southeast corner of Yellowstone.
The Continental Divide forms much of Montana’s eastern border with South Dakota and North Dakota. The Continental Divide heads east from the Great Blackfoot Mountains, then follows the southern boundary of Glacier National Park and continues through northern Montana to Alberta in Canada.
There are several mountains to the east of the watershed, called mountains, but none are high enough or prominent enough to be called true mountains. However, most of these names, such as (Highwood Mountains, Castle Mountains, and Sweet Grass Hills), are usually larger than many actual mountains.
The long fork of the Kootenay River begins in British Columbia, flows into Montana, where it becomes the main tributary of the Kootenay River, and then flows north and east into Idaho. The Missouri River forms at a fork (the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers) along the Gallatin County border, where it rapidly enters Montana through Fort Benton before heading east to Great Falls, then southeast to Billings where it turns south. The river then meanders south to the North Dakota border, where it forms most of the state’s eastern border with Lake Sakakawi.
