nurse working in cardiovascular ICU

Learn More About Working in the Cardiovascular ICU Nursing Specialty

Nurses working in the cardiovascular ICU provide crucial care to patients who have recently undergone open-heart surgery, coronary bypass grafting, abdominal aortic aneurysm, or heart transplant surgery.

Where Does a CVICU Nurse Work?

A CVICU nurse works in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU). These units are found primarily in large hospitals because of the specialization and high risk associated with heart surgeries.

What Does a CVICU Nurse Do?

A CVICU nurse provides care to patients directly after surgery. They monitor vital signs and are trained for the use of cutting edge technological devices that are paramount for stabilization and recovery of heart surgery patients. They document the condition and progress of patients and liaison with family members regarding expectations and education for recovery. Due to the serious nature of the medical conditions of their patients, CVICU nurses only provide care to one or maximum of two patients in a shift.

Recommended Certifications and Experience

For clinicians with an interest in working in the CVICU, it is advisable to gain experience whenever possible with surgical units, and other intensive care units to familiarize themselves with the pressure and tension of working in such critical care environments. Some certifications are required by hospitals while others may be preferred. In addition to demonstrating your commitment to capability and competence in the field, additional certifications that are not required may still give you a competitive edge in the specialty.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN)
  • Cardiac Vascular Nursing Certification (RN-BC)
  • Certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Professional (CCRP)

Qualities Essential in a Successful CVICU Nurse

A successful CVICU nurse needs to be a person who can rise to the challenge of working in a fast-paced and high tension environment. Quick response time and decision making skills are vital due to the fact that a patient’s condition could change in a moment and require intervention or a change in treatment promptly. Detail-oriented nurses who are highly organized and have control over their environment can adapt well to swiftly changing circumstances in the CVICU.

Because this niche is so specialized, nurses are always in demand, shift vacancies cannot be tolerated. Therefore, PRN shifts through Nursa™ are some of the highest paying on our platform due to the extreme importance of a CVICU nurse to a hospital.
