Why Our Resident Clinicians Adore Alaska

Aside from Alaska’s LPN, RN, and CNA job opportunities, there are overwhelming reasons to love living in this state. Alaska’s heartland is home to the continent’s highest peak, Mount Denali. This peak is surrounded by its self-named Denali National Park which is a popular location for viewing the Aurora Borealis, and viewing the diverse wildlife either by taking the train, backpacking trips or even by air taxi.

Southwest Alaska is popular for freshwater fishing, bear sightings, and the volcanoes of Katmai National Park. Cross into the arctic circle if you aren’t afraid of the cold and participate in the winter festivals or settle in and relax at Chena Hot Springs, a resort featuring natural hot springs. Perhaps you’ll spend most of your time in the most populous part of the state, south-central Alaska. There you’ll explore the opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and hiking.

Day cruises are popular for tourists and residents alike, who have just a short time (hello working nurses and assistants, this is you). You don’t need to schedule a lot of time off in order to experience everything the wilderness of Alaska has on offer.

Endoscopy Nurses Work On-Demand with Nursa™

Endoscopy registered nurses are also at times referred to as gastroenterology nurses. Their work primarily involves working with physicians and specialists of the GI tract and assisting with endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures. Their patients either potentially have or actively have GI tract conditions. Some endoscopy nurses also assist with bronchoscopy procedures.

Endoscopy nurses become familiar with gastroenterological disorders such as: Crohn’s Disease, Food Allergies, Acid Reflux, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Celiac Disease, Cancers of the small and large intestines, Rectal Cancer, and Pancreatic Cancer.

Where Does an Endoscopy Nurse Work?

A gastroenterology nurse typically works most commonly in a hospital setting, a surgery center, and sometimes in a long-term care facility. The procedures they assist with are highly specialized and therefore not performed in as wide a variety of settings as some other specialties.

What Does an Endoscopy Nurse Do?

A GI nurse will assist the physician or GI specialist by gathering samples during procedures and administering treatment for more minor problems. They prepare the equipment and assist with the endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures, as well as monitor the patient during and after the procedure. Additionally, they may administer pain management or maintain conscious sedation for a procedure. Patient education about GI disorders, self-care, dietary restrictions is another key responsibility of an endoscopy nurse.

Essential Qualities of a Successful Endoscopy Nurse

GI nurses are required to be proficient with endoscopy equipment therefore dexterity and attention to detail are necessary traits of a successful endoscopy nurse. Clear communication skills and compassion are also important as the nurse will often have the most contact with the patient. Confident and capable endoscopy nurses who collaborate well with physicians can enjoy rewarding success.

Previous work experience in an acute care setting such as a medical surgery unit, a critical or intensive care unit. These work settings hone collaboration skills, critical thinking skills, and rapid reaction skills.

Recommended Certifications for Endo Nurses

Registered nurses serious about a career in endoscopy nursing should work towards the certification to be a CGRN (Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse). The certification of CGRN is not generally required, however, it shows a dedication to knowledge in the field and can give you a competitive edge in your professional portfolio with Nursa™. Additionally, most hospitals and surgery centers require a BLS (Basic Life Support) certification. Other certifications may be required or shown preference.
