How do per diem shifts work?
Suppose one of your facility’s healthcare professionals or support staff calls out at the last minute. You don’t want to pay overtime and haven’t had good results relying on staffing firms for last-minute coverage.
Instead, you get on your computer, tablet, or cellphone and post the open shift on Nursa. Qualified nursing professionals near you request the shift. You review their requests and schedule the clinician who best meets your needs.
You only pay for the hours worked. If you liked the clinician, add them to your list of Favorites so they can be scheduled automatically for future shifts.
Is per diem the same as on call?
Per diem is not the same as on call.
Being on call implies being ready to go to work if needed. Typically, healthcare professionals who are on call are members of internal staff who must be available at a moment’s notice.
A clinician who requests a per diem shift on the Nursa platform is available and actively looking for work.
So, what’s the difference? The first may have to walk out the door halfway through a movie or stay home when everyone else goes to the beach; the second will be excited to be scheduled for a shift.

What’s the difference between PRN and per diem?
Per diem means “per day” in Latin; PRN stands for “pro re nata,” which means as needed. In the context of professional healthcare staffing with Nursa, per diem and PRN staffing are one and the same. Medical facilities can cover open shifts as needed.
What’s the difference between per diem and contract?
Per diem clinicians on Nursa are independent contractors. Therefore, these per diem jobs can be considered contract work. However, contract work can also refer to longer commitments. With Nursa, facilities and clinicians can commit to one shift at a time—no long-term commitments or minimum quotas.
What’s the difference between per diem and travel nursing?
Travel nursing typically involves a 13-week contract, whereas with per diem staffing, facilities can post as few or as many shifts as they need.
If a hospital or other medical facility wants to terminate the travel nursing contract, it might have to pay a penalty fee. With our platform, a facility is under no obligation to schedule the same per diem clinician for another shift. Facilities are free to schedule PRN nurses and nursing assistants only when needed.
They can also test out different per diem clinicians until they find healthcare professionals they love working with. Facilities can add these clinicians to their list of Favorites and choose to Auto-Schedule them for future shifts. They can also offer these clinicians permanent positions without paying hire-away fees.
Unlike travel nursing, our per diem staffing model involves no hidden fees or additional costs for mileage, travel, or overtime.
Do per diem nurses get benefits?
As independent contractors, per diem healthcare professionals do not get employee benefits; they simply receive payment for the hours worked—no overtime costs, employment taxes or administrative cost burden.
Why do per diem nurses get paid more?
Per diem clinicians earn a higher hourly rate because they don’t receive any employee benefits. For facilities, this higher hourly rate still implies significant savings since per diem staffing eliminates the overhead costs of traditional staffing and the fees associated with staffing agencies.
How can I calculate per diem pay?
Nursa suggests the ideal pricing for a shift based on a number of factors:
- Location (city/state, facility type)
- Day and time (holiday, weekend, night shift, etc.)
- License type (RN, LPN/LVN, CNA, etc.)
- Urgency (same day shift vs. weeks out)
Ultimately, pricing is up to you.
You approve pricing before posting a shift and can even set your own rate.
