Rhode Island, officially the State of Rhode Island, is a constituent state of the United States of America. It was one of the original 13 states and one of the six New England states. Rhode Island is bordered to the north and east by Massachusetts, to the south by Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound in the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Connecticut.

It is the smallest state in the union – only about 77 km long and 60 km wide – but it is nonetheless one of the most populous states. The extreme compactness of the territory, proportionally large population, and economic activity closely connected it with neighboring states. In addition, Rhode Island’s close connection to the sea, which spans over 400 miles (640 km) of coastline, is the basis of its nickname, “The Ocean State.”

The capital is Providence. The name Rhode Island is of uncertain origin. It originally referred to an island in Narragansett Bay called Aquidneck Island by the Native Americans. The renaming of Aquidneck to Rhode Island (a name used as a shorthand for the entire colony) by the British in 1644 may have been partly the result of English settlers confusing two foreign sources: Giovanni da Verrazzano’s earlier confrontation of Block Island with the Greek island of Rhodes and the name Rudt Island (Red Island), which the Dutch gave to Aquidneck because of its red soil. Providence Plantations, the first land settlement in Narragansett Bay, was appointed by Minister Roger Williams, founder of the state, who thanked Divine Providence for bringing him safely here in 1636.

Rhode Island’s contribution to the formation of the new country was significant. Especially important was the concept of freedom of conscience, the legacy of Roger Williams. Rhode Island also had an important impact on the industrial development of the United States.

1,545 square miles (4,001 square kilometers). South Carolina, one of the 13 original colonies, is located on the southeastern coast of the United States. The state is an inverted triangle, 285 miles (459 kilometers) long from east to west, about 225 miles (360 kilometers) long from north to south, bordering North Carolina to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Ocean and Southwest Georgia. Located in the center of the state, Columbia is the state’s capital and largest city.
