Administering IV medication. Changing dresses on tender wounds. Assisting in the delivery of a child. Nurses have been the most trusted profession in the United States for 21 years straight, according to a Gallup Poll, for all those reasons and so much more than extend beyond the bedside. Jobs performed by registered nurses require high levels of skill, acuity, trust, honesty, ethical standards, knowledge, etc. Decisions nurses help make on the job can literally mean the difference between life and death. Surviving vs. thriving. Pain vs. comfort control. RNs must first meet the licensing requirements set forth by the state in which they plan to find jobs.

Spokane RNs Find High-Paying Jobs with Nursa

The state of Washington is experiencing a high demand for nurses, and with more RN jobs in Spokane available than the current pool of actively licensed nurses can fill, hospitals and healthcare facilities are turning to per diem registered nurses (RNs) working to fill the gaps.

How to Become an RN in Washington State?

You must first graduate from a nursing education program. Once that is completed, have your certificate of completion, and official transcripts with your degree and graduation date posted and sent to the Washington State Board of Nursing. Once the Nursing Commission has verified your documents you can register for the licensing exam (NCLEX).

For RNs already licensed in another state, Washington is not currently part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, but you can apply for a Washington license via endorsement.

What's the Average RN Salary in Washington State?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes data on occupational income at the national level and then analyzes it down to separate states and even metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. This allows for excellent comparisons for income among states but cities as well. According to the BLS, the average RN salary in Spokane is $92,620 yearly or $44.53 hourly which, while slightly under the state's average, is well above the national average of $82,750 yearly or $39.78 hourly.

RNs can also specialize which increases their value in the workforce which is observed not only in the kinds of positions available to specialty RNs but in their respective incomes as well. Specializing requires a commitment from a nurse, meaning that not only is there a financial aspect to specializing, but as well an investment of their time to study, gain experience, and pass a certification exam.

Another way to earn more as an RN in Spokane is to work as a per diem (PRN) nurse. PRN nurses work on-demand which means they pick up work shift by shift, selecting those which fit within their schedules. Moreover, PRN shifts often offer a higher hourly pay rate than that which you see for staff positions. Hospitals and facilities are motivated to fill their vacancies quickly to keep safe nurse-to-patient ratios and ease the burden on their staff nurses. Earn top hourly rates by working PRN with Nursa.

How to Find RN Jobs Near You

With such high demand, it can be overwhelming searching for RN jobs, and the fear of committing to the wrong place when so much is available can be a real "grass is always greener on the other side" feeling. Or perhaps you want the kind of nursing career that allows you flexibility and variety.

PRN jobs in Spokane are available now on the smartphone app Nursa. Download the free app today, register for an account, and get started. In the app, follow the prompts to set up a professional profile, and verify your nursing license. Nursa pays twice weekly for completed shifts, so it's important to set up your wallet in the app for your direct deposit.

Working PRN allows you opportunities to work in different settings which can be a great way to see where you fit in best before committing to a staff job. Perhaps you'll discover that the variety and flexibility that accompany PRN work allow you the type of freedom for your personal life that you crave. Work as much as you want, Nursa does not impose a maximum or minimum quota so instead of requesting time off from work, simply schedule your shifts around your other responsibilities.

What's an Example RN Job Description?

When looking at PRN shifts, before you apply be sure to read the position descriptions thoroughly. For example, many position descriptions will detail the expectations and RN responsibilities for the shift which may vary some depending on the unit or type of facility. Be sure to read for any required certifications or vaccinations as well. Some of the most common responsibilities that you'll find will include:

  • Monitor patient condition.
  • Assess patient progression or regression.
  • Collaborate with other clinicians.
  • Perform and analyze diagnostic testing.
  • Administer medications as prescribed.
  • Documentation.
  • Supervision of other healthcare staff.

What Are Qualities a Good RN Should Have?

It goes without saying that compassion and empathy are important characteristics for a registered nurse. Nevertheless, caring isn't enough to be a successful RN. Attention to detail and the ability to communicate with other clinicians as well as patients and their families are skills that will be honed quickly. Analytical and problem-solving skills are important as well as patient care is complex and unique to each individual. Nursing is a career that requires constant learning, so determination and commitment are also important qualities to be successful.
