Find High-Paying Per Diem LPN Jobs in Portland

There are many ways to find high-paying LPN jobs in Portland, Oregon, but there are particular advantages of picking up per diem shifts. For all licensed practical nurses (LPNs) looking for great opportunities, this article explains different aspects of per diem or P.R.N. nurse jobs in this great city.

What's the Job Outlook in Portland for Nurses?

Oregon has an excellent job outlook for nurses and nursing assistants, including high salaries for registered nurses (RNs), LPNs, and certified nursing assistants (CNAs). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recognizes Portland as one of the highest-paying cities for nurses. Furthermore, Portland's demand for LPNs is constantly growing; the job growth rate is estimated to be 5 percent, faster than the average for other professions.

What's the Average LPN Salary in Portland?

The average wage for LPNs in Portland is $33.26 per hour or $69,170 per year. This pay is higher than the average for the state of Oregon and higher than the national average.

However, Portland's cost of living is also an aspect to consider. According to recent data, Portland's average cost of living is higher than the national average. Therefore, LPNs must compare their wage to the average living wage in the city to determine whether they need to find ways to supplement their income.

It is important to note that wages in Portland can be significantly higher per hour for LPNs who choose to work per diem shifts (also called PRN shifts). Per diem LPNs have many advantages over those in staff positions:

  • LPNs can choose their hours: Per diem LPNs can create their schedules by choosing which shifts they want to work.
  • LPNs can earn more per hour: LPNs who work PRN shifts generally get better wages since healthcare facilities do not have to pay insurance or other benefits and due to the urgent nature of the jobs.
  • LPNs gain more experience: LPNs who work in only one setting will mainly have experience with one type of patient and their most common conditions. However, PRN clinicians can work in various settings and care for diverse patients with many different health conditions.

Clearly, picking up per diem shifts offers numerous advantages to LPNs in Portland.
