Nursing professionals that are interested in pursuing a career involving labor and delivery must obtain credentials and certification for working in such a specialized field. The certification not only demonstrates the nurse’s advanced knowledge in the area, but also ensures that the nurse’s qualifications have been verified and validated. It also ensures that the nurse is up-to-date on the latest safety guidelines, best practices, and protocols.
With the various types of labor and delivery credentials, nurses can demonstrate they are capable of managing labor and delivery safely and effectively. The most common credentialing organizations are the National Certification Corporation (NCC) and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). NCC credentials include the Certified Nurse–Midwife (CNM) and the Certified Nurse–Adult Gynaecological Care (CN-A). With the NCSBN, nurses can obtain the Certified Labor and Delivery Nurse (CLDN) and the Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (CNNP).
