What Is an ER CNA and What Do They Do?

With such a large population, the demand for healthcare services in Chicago is always high. This is especially true for emergency care services, where individuals seek immediate medical attention for critical conditions. In these situations, the Emergency Room (ER) becomes a crucial hub for patients, and the need for skilled healthcare professionals, like Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), is paramount.

The ER is a fast-paced, high-stress environment that requires healthcare workers to possess unique skills and abilities.

In the ER, CNAs have the added responsibility of assisting with trauma patients and other emergency cases. This includes obtaining and documenting patient information, performing CPR, and transporting patients to other departments for diagnostic tests or treatments. ER, CNAs also aid in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the ER, as well as stocking supplies and equipment for efficient functioning.

The Life of a CNA Working in the ER in Chicago

In Chicago, CNAs working in the ER may encounter individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and languages. As a result, communication skills and cultural sensitivity are crucial for creating a safe and efficient healthcare environment. Additionally, CNAs in the ER must adhere to strict protocols and procedures to maintain the safety of patients, themselves, and their colleagues.

A typical day for an ER CNA in Chicago is anything but typical. Shifts may last 8, 12, or even 24 hours, depending on the unit's needs. Nurses and CNAs work together as a team to provide the best patient care, with CNAs handling daily living tasks and nurses managing clinical tasks and administering medications.

Upon arrival, CNAs must assess all patients in their assigned area and respond to any changes in their condition. They also assist with triaging patients, meaning they prioritize who needs care first based on the severity of their condition. In the ER, time is of the essence, and CNAs must be ready to jump into action at a moment's notice. Life can be unpredictable in the ER, and CNAs must be adaptable and able to multitask.

Some other high-paying specialties for CNAs in Chicago include the ICU and the Med-Surg.
