Neonatal Resuscitation Program for Healthcare Workers
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification created by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association.
This training course is designed to present an evidence-based team approach to newborn care. You can expect a blend of online and in-person components including: virtual case simulations, online exams, and an in-person component that includes scenarios, simulations, practice and evaluation.
NRP Course Information
You'll sign up for the NRP provider course, which is divided into two parts.
Part 1 will be self-led. It will consist of:
- Studying the coursebook on your own
- Online exams
- Online simulations of patient cases
- Print certificate of completion
Part 2 will be the in-person portion, led by an instructor. This part is understandably more involved due to the in-person environment and under instructor guidance, you will work on the performance and integrated skills.
- The performance skills will include review and actual practice of resuscitation skills. The integrated skills portion will include scenarios where your readiness for simulations and debriefings will be assessed by the instructor.
- Once deemed ready by the instructor, you'll move on to the simulation and debriefing component of the course. Here, you'll be in a structured setting and will utilize your learned skills and knowledge with a team, demonstrating effective teamwork and communication.
- To finish, you'll have an instructor evaluation.
Take special note that Part 2 of the course must be completed within 90 days of Part 1.
How to Get Started
The AAP has created a guide in PDF format to walk you through the steps to get registered and enrolled in a course. This guide is available at: https://www.aap.org/en-us/Documents/nrp_provider_howto.pdf
How to Get Your eCard
After you've completed all the steps of the components of the course, and an instructor approves your competence, and a course evaluation is required. Once completed, your individual NRP Provider eCard will generate. It will be found on the resuscitation credentials page and can be printed or emailed.
Is the Neonatal Resuscitation Program Required?
It may not be required for all PRN facility postings through Nursa. However, any clinician who works in the specialties of labor and delivery, mother and baby, or pediatrics may find that the credentials of this course add to their overall professional competence and provide facility management more confidence in their skills and dedication to their neonatal patients. Furthermore, any clinician who may have an interest in the specialty or merely wants to diversify their skill set will find this program to be beneficial.
