The healthcare field is everchanging, with countless new developments in techniques, technology, and much more. Individuals who work in healthcare and those who don’t most likely have something in common, not having extensive knowledge on every single area of healthcare since there are countless options for specialization and more to choose from when deciding to work in the field. Many of these professions are still developing today in the search for more care methods. One of those specific areas of healthcare is the neurorestorative care field, and if you wish to know more about this complex area of care, you’re in just the right place.

What is Neurorestorative Care?

So what exactly is neurorestorative care? Branching from the studies of the human nervous system and neurology, neurorestorative care is the broad field of medicine focusing on diagnosis and conditions regarding the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. This care field relies on neuroscience to find and improve new patient care methods. Neurorestorative care, or restorative neurology, branches off of these studies and dedicates itself to improving the functions of an impaired nervous system through different methods of neuro control or neurorestorative therapy. The overall goal of this care process is to take a broken-down nervous system and restore it to normal functions with our current technology and techniques to the best of our abilities.

Due to the complexity of this wide-ranging field of medicine, there are numerous different professions and specialization options for nurses looking to work in this nursing specialty or medical field. Thus, these professions all play different roles in neuroscience and neurological restoration. Beginning with the neuroscientist, the role of those who study the nervous system itself branches off into roles such as the neurological surgeon, those in charge of performing surgery on the nervous system—continuing past these two, a neurologist diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system. However, these professions are due to the help of those who study the diseases of the nervous system, neuropathologists, and those who study the action that drugs have on the nervous system, neuropharmacologist. In addition to this study on that method of neurorestorative care, as a counterpart, neurophysiologists study electrical responses from the nervous system.

What Types of Patients Require Neurorestorative Care?

Due to the nature of the human body and a handful of conditions that can begin from birth, neurorestorative care is not reserved for one age range, primarily because numerous neurological disorders and diseases can occur in different ways. Although humans can indeed experience or have a neurological condition or disease at any age, the elderly are especially at risk for developing neurological disorders such as lumbar arthrosis or dementia.

All About the Neurorestorative ICU

Although locations such as clinics and available units of a hospital can be seen for neurological care, what is the neuro ICU? This is the intensive care unit for neurological care specifically. This unit is focused on caring for those with neurological conditions that are immediately life-threatening, such as post-operative brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, and more. The field of neurointensive care alone covers an extensive range of diseases and thus requires extensive knowledge regarding the nervous system and how it works with the rest of the body. Some professions can be found in the neuro-ICU, such as neurologists, neurosurgeons, intensive care specialists, and much more.

Types of Neurological Injuries and Disorders

The human body can experience numerous conditions regarding the nervous system, resulting in why the field of neurology and neurorestorative care is so complex, with many different units to know about. We can experience disorders, injuries, and diseases in the nervous system. However, the most common neurological conditions are dementia, strokes, epilepsy, migraines, and other headaches. In addition, acute spinal cord injury, brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis are also quite common. However, there are also incredibly rare neurological diseases such as adrenoleukodystrophyvertical gaze palsy, and many more.
