When it comes to keeping on top of nursing trends and having your pulse on what’s happening in the industry, there are few better ways to do this than by following nursing blogs. These blogs by nurses, nursing associations, and other advocacy groups or nursing publications cover everything from personal accounts by nurses to top tips you need to know as a new nurse.

We’ve rounded up a list of the top nursing blogs for 2023. Keep reading to learn who is behind these blogs, what content you can expect from them, and links to some of their most helpful resources for nurses.

American Nurses Association

hands

The American Nurses Association is a member organization founded in 1896 to represent and fight for the interests of registered nurses across the US.

The Association’s blog updates members on the latest healthcare news and developments, provides information on clinical and practical nursing topics, and supports nurses' career progression. The blog features the following sections:

  • American Nurse – This section features peer-reviewed articles and blog posts on healthcare and the day-to-day issues of nursing.
  • Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN) — This scholarly journal aims to improve healthcare quality. Read it to keep up with the latest insights in the nursing profession.
  • Capitol Beat – This platform helps members learn more about the Association’s federal advocacy efforts and the status of public health policy. It is a must-have resource if you’re looking to keep abreast of advocacy news in healthcare.

The Nerdy Nurse

If you’re looking for blogs by nurses, stop your scroll. Founded by Brittney Wilson, BSN, RN, The Nerdy Nurse covers content on “nursing issues, nursing products and services, healthcare, technology, social media, personal branding, and lifestyle topics.” Brittney, who is also the co-founder of Health Media Academy, has a background in medical-surgical nursing and clinical information systems administration.

Off the Charts

Owned by the American Journal of Nursing, the blog Off the Charts features various blog contributors, including “working nurses, editors, patients, professors, policy leaders, and researchers.” The blog for nurses highlights significant research findings, policy issues regarding healthcare, challenges in clinical practice, news, and other career-related issues. It also features stories by nurses and patients, so if you’re looking for relatable content or tear-jerking stories, this is a blog you won’t want to miss.

Advances in Nursing Science (ANS)

Looking for intellectual stimulation? Founded in 1978 by Peggy L. Chinn, RN, Ph.D., FAAN, this blog not only publishes articles on many health-related topics, but it welcomes comments from its readers. Furthermore, readers can also submit their own articles for publication. Nurse authors are especially welcome since this journal recognizes the importance of developing health knowledge in the nursing field. In fact, the main goals of this blog are advancing the development of nursing knowledge and promoting the integration of nursing philosophies, theories, and research with practice.

This blog has been around for a long time, but it is as relevant now as it was thirty years ago. Some of its most recent articles include the following:

  • Increase, Protect, and Support: Illuminating the Contributions of African American Nurse Scientists
  • Caring for Gender Minority Persons
  • Modification of a Grounded Theory of Postpartum Depression

Nurse Abnormalities

Founded and run by Danielle LeVeck, DNP, ACNPC-AG, CCNS, RN, CCRN, Nurse Abnormalities features current nursing issues and controversies, educational resources, social media guides, and personal accounts from nurses. Danielle started the blog shortly after becoming a nurse when she “instantly recognized the beautiful quirks of nursing culture and healthcare.” Read the blog to get her personal and professional takes on various nursing issues.

Evidence Based Birth®

Nurse helping patient

This website is much more than a blog: It is a comprehensive resource center for both birthing parents and birth professionals, including nurses, midwives, physicians, doulas, and childbirth educators. The founder, Rebecca Dekker, is a registered nurse and Ph.D. who worked for many years as a nursing professor and research scientist. Dr. Dekker experienced trauma during the birth of her first child and now advocates full-time for evidence-based care for birthing parents.

The team has also expanded to include birth workers, advocates, and research scientists from around the world.

Listen to the Evidence Based Birth® podcast here or browse EBB’s signature articles, including the following:
