Facilities that care for older adults and other vulnerable residents keep training on record covering how staff recognize and report mistreatment. Abuse, neglect, exploitation and misappropriation of property training is that record, and a facility that asks for it expects the course completed before a clinician works a shift on its floor. The four terms in the title describe distinct categories rather than one broad idea, which is why they are trained together.
What the four categories cover
Definitions vary by facility policy and by state, but the categories are generally understood this way:
- Abuse is the willful infliction of injury, unreasonable confinement, intimidation, or punishment that results in physical harm, pain, or mental anguish.
- Neglect is the failure to provide the goods and services a resident needs to avoid harm.
- Exploitation is taking advantage of a resident for personal gain through manipulation, coercion, or threats.
- Misappropriation of property is the wrongful use of a resident's belongings or money without consent.
The facility asking for this record is the authority on which definitions govern its building.
Why the categories are trained separately
Neglect and misappropriation are the two most often missed, because neither requires intent to harm and neither always leaves a visible mark. A licensed nurse or nursing assistant is often the person best placed to notice a pattern in the first place, which is why the training is aimed at floor staff rather than administrators.
What the training does not replace
Completing this course does nothing about the reporting duties a clinician already carries under state law. Mandated reporter obligations stand on their own, and a facility may keep a separate acknowledgment on file alongside this record.
Where the training is available
This training is accessible via ShiftReady. Once the certificate is issued, it can be filed in the state documents section of a clinician profile.
