This credential asks for one of 3 things: documentation of the hepatitis B vaccine series, a titer showing immunity, or a signed declination. Which one you file is your choice, and any of them closes the item. It sits with your other nursing credentials.
What does the series involve?
Three doses across roughly 6 months on the traditional schedule, given at the start, a month later, and 6 months after the first. A newer 2-dose vaccine given a month apart is also available and satisfies the requirement where it is offered. What matters for credentialing is that a partially completed series is not a completed one, and the record needs each dose with its date.
What if you started the series but never finished?
You generally do not begin again. An interrupted series is usually continued from where it stopped rather than restarted, even years later, though that is a conversation for the provider giving the dose. For credentialing, the series counts as incomplete until the final dose is documented, so an unfinished series with no titer leaves the credential open.
What if you cannot find your records?
Common, and there are routes. Your state immunization registry may hold the doses, particularly if you were vaccinated after registries became widespread. A former employer's occupational health department may have the record if the vaccination was for work. Where nothing surfaces, a titer answers the question directly, which is why it is the usual fallback.
How does timing affect you?
Considerably, if you need the series. Six months is a long wait when a shift is close, and a titer returns an answer in days rather than months. For clinicians vaccinated before who simply lack the paperwork, that is the difference between working next week and next year.
