Facilities may ask for a medication aide or med tech credential before approving clinicians to pick up shifts that involve administering medications. Unlike a facility record, this one is a certification the clinician holds and carries between employers.
One role, many names
The same work goes by different titles depending on where it is done. Certified medication aide, medication technician, qualified medication administration personnel, certified residential medication aide, and medication aide-certified all appear across state lines, and the abbreviations follow: CMA, QMAP, CRMA, MA-C. A credential list may use whichever name applies locally.
Scope is set by the state
What a medication aide may administer, in which settings, and under whose supervision comes from state regulation rather than from an employer. Those rules differ substantially, and a credential earned in one state does not automatically transfer to another. The state-by-state picture is worth checking before assuming a certification travels.
Where it sits relative to nursing licensure
A medication aide credential is not a nursing license and does not substitute for one. It authorizes a defined set of medication-related tasks, generally under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Many people hold it alongside a nursing assistant certification, and some use it as a step toward further licensure.
What facilities ask for
Facilities keeping this on a credential list are documenting that someone is authorized for the medication tasks a shift involves. Individual buildings may also keep their own medication guidelines or training records separately, which are different items and do not replace the certification.
