Medication Aide/Medtech

A Medication Aide (MA) or Medication Technician (Medtech) is a certified healthcare provider trained to safely administer routine medications to residents in long-term care, assisted living, and residential care facilities. Under the delegation and supervision of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN), Medtechs perform crucial pharmacy support tasks within state-defined scopes of practice.

What does the credential cover?

Medtech certification programs combine classroom instruction with supervised clinical skill evaluations.

Safe medication administration

  • Administration techniques: Applying the six rights of medication administration, reading drug labels accurately, and measuring prescribed dosages.
  • Routes of delivery: Safely administering oral, topical, ophthalmic, otic, nasal, and inhaled medications.

Storage, documentation, and safety

  • Med cart security: Maintaining secure medication storage and completing shift-change controlled substance counts.
  • eMAR & clinical reporting: Documenting administered doses in Electronic Medication Administration Records (eMAR) and reporting adverse reactions or refused medications to the charge nurse.

Why is medication aide certification required?

State health departments strictly regulate who can handle and distribute prescription drugs in residential care environments. Holding an active Medication Aide certification verifies that a technician possesses formal training, state exam clearance, and active registry status required to administer medications safely and satisfy state licensing rules.

What does it look like on a shift?

On shift, a Medtech independently manages scheduled medication passes, answers resident questions regarding routine prescriptions, and maintains accurate eMAR documentation, allowing charge nurses to focus on complex clinical assessments and care plans.

Nursa is always there for me!”

“I love the easy user-friendly app with clear pictures and information about a facility. I work with other agencies and the Nursa app is most visually appealing! The best thing about Nursa though is the professional attitude of the staff whenever you call or need help. Again, surpasses other agencies”
