Where the med tech title is used
Some states certify this work under the medication technician or med tech name, others use medication aide, and a few structure it as an addition to an existing nursing assistant credential. Assisted living and residential settings tend to use med tech more commonly than skilled nursing does, though usage is not consistent even within a state.
Training and testing
Programs generally combine classroom instruction with supervised practice and conclude with an examination. Hours, curriculum, and who may offer the training are set by the state rather than by employers, which is why program length varies noticeably between them. Many people enter through a nursing assistant credential first, and some continue toward further nursing education afterward.
What the certification authorizes
A defined set of medication tasks under licensed supervision, with the boundaries drawn by state regulation. Routes of administration, which medications are included, and what requires a licensed nurse instead all vary. Certification in one state does not automatically authorize the same work in another.

A facility keeping this on a credential list is recording that someone is authorized for the medication work a shift involves. Buildings may separately maintain their own medication guidelines or training, which are different records covering local procedure rather than authority.
