What is the PASS process?
PASS stands for Process for Assessing Scope of Services. It's a structured tool for evaluating the functional abilities of individuals with brain injuries, developed specifically for post-acute rehabilitation settings. PASS looks at a wide range of daily living skills — from basic self-care to community navigation — and scores each one on a standardized scale. The aim is to identify areas where the patient needs support and to track their progress over time.
How does PASS differ from other assessment tools?
It's tailored to the needs and goals of brain injury rehabilitation. General functional assessments like the Barthel Index or the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) are great for overall snapshots, but they don't dive deep into the specific skills that matter most for community reintegration after a brain injury. PASS breaks those skills down into granular steps and provides a consistent language for the whole care team to discuss the patient's abilities and support needs.
