The work opportunities available to LPNs in Texas are varied, and demand is high. So, let's dive right in, shall we?

How to Become an LPN in Texas

First, Texas doesn't say licensed practical nurses (LPNs). Instead, the title is licensed vocational nurse (LVN). Aside from the single word change in their title, the duties of an LVN in the state of Texas will be much what you would expect of an LPN in another state.

To become an LVN in Texas, you must complete an accredited vocational nursing program and become licensed by the Texas State Board of Nursing. Once licensed, you can get started.

One benefit to becoming an LVN in Texas is that the state is a member of eNLC. This means that once licensed with the state of Texas. You can work in other eNLC member states without an additional nursing license.

What Does an LVN/LPN Do?

As mentioned, LVN job duties are the same as what an LPN does. Scope of care can vary a bit between states, but ultimately an LVN takes on most of the direct nursing care in the work setting. As an LVN in Texas, you can expect the following tasks to be within your scope of care:

  • Administer and document oral medications
  • Check and document blood sugar levels
  • Check and document vital signs
  • Help patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including toileting, bathing, and eating or drinking
  • Wound care
  • Working alongside or sometimes with the assistants of certified nursing assistants (CNAs)
  • Collaborate with registered nurses (RNs) regarding the patient plan of care

How Much Does an LVN/LPN Earn in San Antonio?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), LVNs in the San Antonio metro area earn an annual average salary of $51,330, or $24.68 hourly. Those figures come in slightly higher than the average for the entire state, $50,220/$24.15, and sit right on the nationwide average for LPNs which is $51,850/$24.93.

How to Find LVN/LPN Jobs Near You

The BLS reports that Texas is one of the top employers (second) nationwide of LVNs. This should be reassuring to LVNs because the demand for their expertise is high. LVNs can expect job opportunities in skilled nursing facilities, home health care, physician's offices, hospitals, surgery centers, assisted living and nursing home facilities, and outpatient care centers. The opportunities are vast, so how do you decide?
