MSUM’s nursing program is designed to produce adaptable, culturally competent healthcare leaders. The traditional pre-licensure BSN is a six-semester professional sequence that students typically enter after completing 28–30 credits of prerequisites. Unique to MSUM is its Holistic Admissions Process, which moves beyond simple GPA metrics to evaluate applicants based on three equal pillars: academic performance (33%), TEAS exam scores (33%), and an "Experiences & Attributes" essay (34%) that highlights volunteerism and personal resilience. For current nurses, MSUM offers a highly flexible RN-to-BSN program with 100% online or hybrid options, while the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) focuses on Nursing Education and Healthcare Administration.
The program emphasizes "Dragon" excellence through hands-on learning in the university's Nursing Simulation Labs. These labs recreate acute care and clinic environments, allowing students to use high-fidelity manikins to practice complex skills like medication titration and emergency stabilization. Clinical rotations are a major component of the curriculum, with students placed at leading regional healthcare systems such as Sanford Health and Essentia Health. These rotations provide exposure to diverse settings, from high-volume trauma centers to rural community clinics. As of 2026, MSUM graduates continue to be highly sought after in the Red River Valley, with the program maintaining a 100% job placement rate for those seeking employment in the field.
Compared to other regional programs, MSUM stands out for its Dual Acceptance Program (DAP) with local community colleges, allowing students to transition seamlessly from an Associate degree to a BSN. The program also prioritizes Cultural Competence, requiring specific coursework in intercultural communication to prepare students for the diverse patient populations of the Upper Midwest. Admission remains selective, requiring a minimum 2.85 GPA in core prerequisites, including Human Anatomy, Microbiology, and Chemistry.
