About Saginaw Valley State University

Saginaw Valley State University is a public, four-year university in University Center, Michigan. Its nursing programs include a campus-based Bachelor of Science in Nursing, along with additional nursing study options for working nurses. The curriculum prepares students in health assessment, pharmacology, evidence-based practice, patient safety, communication, leadership, and community health.

Students complete supervised clinical learning in regional health care settings and build the skills needed for entry-level nursing practice. The BSN path is designed to prepare graduates for the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. Compared with some nearby programs, SVSU offers a smaller university setting with strong ties to Michigan health systems and a practical, student-focused approach to clinical education. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

A BSN is a 4-year university RN degree, widely preferred by employers and required for many advanced roles, whose graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

An MSN is a 2–3 year graduate degree that prepares RNs for advanced practice, leadership, and specialized roles such as nurse practitioner or nurse educator.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

A DNP is the highest clinical nursing degree, taking 2–4 years, preparing nurses for advanced practice, executive leadership, and policy roles—distinct from the research-focused PhD.

Post-Graduate APRN Certificate

A post-graduate APRN certificate is a 12–24 month credential that lets MSN-prepared nurses add or change an advanced practice specialty without earning a second degree.
