Togus VA Medical Center

The VA Maine Healthcare System operates from a campus at Togus, a few miles east of Augusta, Maine, and holds a distinction no other VA facility can claim. Founded in 1866 as the first National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, it opened to care for Civil War veterans decades before the Veterans Administration existed, and has operated continuously since. The campus reflects that history, with a national cemetery on the grounds and buildings spanning more than a century of construction.

As the only VA medical center in Maine, Togus serves the entire state, from coastal communities to the northern counties, supported by community-based outpatient clinics and telehealth that carry substantial weight given the distances involved. Services include inpatient medical care, surgery, primary care, and outpatient specialty clinics, alongside mental and behavioral health programs covering outpatient treatment, PTSD care, substance use treatment, and outreach to veterans experiencing homelessness. Extended care through a community living center and rehabilitation support an aging veteran population, and Maine's veterans skew older than the national average. Nurses work across medical-surgical, perioperative, outpatient, mental health, and long-term care settings, with veterans needing high-acuity care referred to larger VA facilities in New England.
