Vermont State University, Castleton Campus
The Castleton campus sits in the village of Castleton, Vermont, in the Rutland area near the New York border. Founded in 1787, it operated for centuries as Castleton State College and then Castleton University before becoming part of Vermont State University in 2023, when the state consolidated several public institutions into a single university with campuses across Vermont. The campus retains its residential character and Division III athletics while now functioning within a larger system.
Vermont State University offers associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees at public tuition rates, with programs spanning the liberal arts and sciences, education, business, and health-related and technical fields. Program availability varies by campus, and the consolidation has meant ongoing adjustments to where specific offerings are delivered, with some programs running online or across multiple sites. Students in science and health tracks complete the foundational coursework in biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology that supports clinical and graduate study. The rural setting places the campus near regional health care employers in Rutland and the surrounding counties. Compared with private New England colleges, Vermont State offers substantially lower tuition with a small-campus environment.
