The program is powered by the David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS). This 20,000-square-foot facility is one of the most advanced in the country, featuring high-fidelity manikins that can sweat, cry, and even give birth. Students engage in over 29,000 educational encounters annually, including interprofessional "crisis scenarios" where they train alongside medical and pharmacy students. Clinical rotations are conducted within the WVU Medicine system, including J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, a Magnet-designated Level 1 Trauma Center. These high-stakes environments prepare students for immediate professional success; in early 2026, it was announced that all 122 BSN graduates from the Morgantown campus passed the NCLEX-RN on their first attempt.
Compared to other regional programs, WVU is distinguished by its rural health focus and its "Nursing Pathway," which allows high school students to begin college nursing courses tuition-free. The program's research initiatives, backed by over $2 million in annual grants, focus specifically on reducing health disparities in West Virginia. Admission remains highly competitive, requiring a minimum 3.0 GPA in all prerequisite science courses (Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology) with a grade of "C" or better.
