Jobs in Vegas: Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

Who wouldn’t want to live in the Entertainment Capital of the World, the City of Lights, the City that Never Sleeps, the City of Second Chances? If you live in Las Vegas, it doesn’t matter if you get permanently stuck with weekend shifts because every day in Las Vegas is like a Saturday. You can party, gamble, see shows, or relax at a spa any day of the week.

Sounds pretty good, right? However, you are probably wondering if moving to Las Vegas is a responsible decision, if there are good healthcare jobs, and if you’ll be able to make enough money. Don’t worry; we’ll break it down for you. Read on to see what your life would be like if you lived in Las Vegas

Let’s Talk Money

The potential salary we can earn is always one of the most important considerations – if not the most important one – when we are deciding where to live and what type of work to do. Therefore, before we talk about the fun stuff, like nightlife and other entertainment, let’s talk about this essential consideration: money.

What's the Average RN Salary in Las Vegas?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (updated in September 2021), the average annual salary for Registered Nurses (RNs) nationwide is $75,330, whereas in the state of Nevada the average annual salary for RNs falls into the highest-paid category for RNs, which is $80,960-$120,560. Another interesting tidbit about Nevada is that, unlike that of many other states, Nevada’s average annual salary for RNs is the same throughout the state. This means that you can have your cake and eat it too; in other words, you can make one of the highest possible salaries for RNs in the US while you simultaneously live in the city with the best nightlife in the whole country – aka Vegas.

What's the Average LPN Salary in Las Vegas?

In the case of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), the average annual salary nationwide is $48,820, whereas – once again – the average annual wage of LPNs in Nevada falls into the highest-paid category in the $54,580-$67,620 range. Furthermore, as is the case with RN salaries in Nevada, LPNs throughout the state can aspire to earn this highest-tier wage. Vegas, here I come!

What's the Average CNA Salary in Las Vegas?

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) can also expect to earn more in Las Vegas than in most other parts of the country since the average salary range for CNAs in Nevada is $31,720-$34,280 whereas the average national salary for this job is $30,830 per year.

Cost of Living

Clearly, Las Vegas is a good place to make money as a nurse, but is the cost of living in the Entertainment Capital of the World too high? Will you end up scrambling to make ends meet even with a good salary? No! Not at all. A study by Unitek College found that the cost of living in Las Vegas is actually lower than the national average – 6% cheaper than the average of all the cities in the study. For one thing, Nevada has zero state income tax. Furthermore, homeowners in Las Vegas pay 10% less than the national average in utilities.

Are There Jobs for Nurses in Las Vegas?

Is this all sounding too good to be true? We’re not done yet. Although the U.S. Labor Bureau estimates that the nursing field will grow 9% between 2020 and 2030 nationwide, the growth of RN jobs in Nevada is estimated to be 41% by 2030! Now, we must take this information with a grain of salt because although the growth of the nursing field in Nevada is promising, by 2030 supply will exceed demand. Therefore, start packing and settle in Las Vegas before the job rush begins.

Now the Fun Part

The beauty of Vegas is that it has something for everyone. Not into casinos? How about luxury spas, gourmet restaurants, and high-end shopping? Lounge poolside at The Venetian Resort or choose from more than 150 extraordinary services at Canyon Ranch, one of the world’s largest spas. Then go for dinner to one of Vegas’s hottest new restaurants according to Eater Las Vegas. Seafood fans should hit up Chickie’s & Pete’s for lobster pie; visit La Cocina Exclusivo for some gourmet Mexican food; or reserve a table at Carversteak and order the wagyu.

Maybe you’re more of an outdoorsy type or you’re looking for family-friendly activities; Las Vegas has exactly what you need too. Consider hiking in Red Rock Canyon or taking a helicopter tour of Hoover Dam. In addition, whether you have little ones or not, don’t miss a Cirque du Soleil performance and – even if you don’t gamble – make sure you visit the Bellagio to watch the water-and-light fountain display.
