What Does an LPN Do?

Licensed practical nurses, or LPNs, are skilled healthcare professionals who provide compassionate medical care to patients. LPNs often work alongside registered nurses (RNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs). LPNs act as liaisons between physicians and patients and provide attentive bedside care.

While LPNs typically have less training than registered nurses, they are still required to provide accurate, high-quality patient care. Some of the responsibilities of LPNs are as follows:

  1. Monitoring vital signs
  2. Assisting with personal hygiene
  3. Changing wound dressings
  4. Administering certain medications (usually under the supervision of an RN)
  5. Adhering to healthcare plans developed by RNs and doctors
  6. Reporting and updating patient status to RNs and doctors
