What HIPAA covers
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 established federal protections for health information. Two parts matter most at the bedside. The Privacy Rule governs how protected health information may be used and disclosed, and the Security Rule sets standards for safeguarding it in electronic form. Later amendments, including the HITECH Act, extended breach notification duties and strengthened enforcement.
Why it comes up on credential lists
Clinicians encounter protected health information constantly, and the obligations attach to the individual as well as the organization. That is why facilities keep the training on record rather than assuming it. A clinician working several buildings carries the same duty at each, even though each facility maintains its own record of the training.
What these records typically address
Training tends to concentrate on the situations that actually arise on a unit: what counts as protected information, when disclosure is permitted, how minimum necessary applies in practice, and what to do when something is disclosed in error. Documentation practices usually get attention too, since charting is where most handling of patient information happens.
