Medication Assistant Certification Endorsement (Medtech)

The Medication Assistant Certification Endorsement—often referred to as a Medication Assistant Certified (MA-C) or Medtech endorsement—is an advanced state credential granted to Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) or Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNAs). This endorsement expands a nurse aide's standard scope of practice, legally allowing them to prepare and administer routine medications under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

What does the endorsement cover?

Endorsement programs combine classroom theory, pharmacology lab work, and supervised clinical hours.

Advanced pharmacology and administration

  • Six rights verification: Mastered techniques for confirming patient, medication, dosage, route, timing, and documentation.
  • Administration routes: Practical training in administering oral, topical, ophthalmic, otic, nasal, and inhaled medications safely.

Supervisory protocols and documentation

  • Delegation guidelines: Understanding legal boundaries for tasks delegated by a supervising nurse.
  • eMAR charting: Real-time logging of administered or refused medications and observing for potential adverse drug reactions.

Why is the medication assistant endorsement required?

State boards of nursing strictly regulate medication handling to protect patient safety. Obtaining this endorsement proves that an aide has completed state-approved pharmacology coursework and clinical evaluations, verifying they can safely handle routine medication passes in long-term care, assisted living, and intermediate care facilities.

What does it look like on a shift?

On shift, an endorsed medication assistant manages routine medication passes and documents entries in the eMAR under nurse oversight. This allows supervising nurses to focus on complex clinical assessments, treatment planning, and acute emergency care while maintaining timely medication schedules for residents.

Nursa is always there for me!”

“I love the easy user-friendly app with clear pictures and information about a facility. I work with other agencies and the Nursa app is most visually appealing! The best thing about Nursa though is the professional attitude of the staff whenever you call or need help. Again, surpasses other agencies”
