About James H. Quillen VA Medical Center

The James H. Quillen VA Medical Center occupies a historic campus in Mountain Home, Tennessee, adjacent to Johnson City in the northeast corner of the state. The grounds date to a soldiers' home established in the early 1900s, and many of the original buildings remain in use, giving the campus a character unlike most VA facilities. Named for the longtime Tennessee congressman, the medical center serves a wide Appalachian catchment reaching into southwest Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and western North Carolina, with community-based outpatient clinics extending access across mountainous terrain where travel distances are substantial.

Services include inpatient medical and surgical care, intensive care, surgery, primary care, and outpatient specialty clinics, alongside mental and behavioral health programs covering outpatient treatment, PTSD care, substance use treatment, and outreach to veterans experiencing homelessness. Extended care through a community living center and rehabilitation services support an aging veteran population. An affiliation with East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine makes the facility a teaching site for residents and health professions students. Nurses work across critical care, medical-surgical, perioperative, outpatient, mental health, and long-term care settings, with a patient population carrying the chronic disease burden common to the region.
