Tennessee Wesleyan University is a private, United Methodist-affiliated university based in Athens, Tennessee, but its nursing program operates roughly fifty miles north in Knoxville. The Fort Sanders Nursing Department sits on the campus of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, continuing an affiliation that traces back to the hospital's own school of nursing. That history distinguishes the program from campus-based nursing departments, since classroom instruction, skills labs, and clinical rotations all happen within a functioning medical center rather than at a distance from one.
Coursework builds from anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology through health assessment into nursing care across medical-surgical, maternal-newborn, pediatric, psychiatric-mental health, and community settings. Clinical rotations draw on Fort Sanders Regional and other facilities across the Covenant Health system and greater Knoxville, giving students exposure to a range of acuity from routine community care to complex inpatient cases. Graduates are prepared to sit for the NCLEX-RN. Cohorts remain small enough that faculty know students individually. For students who want hospital immersion from the start rather than a traditional residential college experience, the setting offers a different footing than most Tennessee nursing programs provide.
