Morehead State University offers a tiered approach to nursing education, catering to both traditional students and those seeking a faster entry into the workforce. The Pre-licensure BSN is a traditional four-year, 120-credit program that admits a limited cohort each fall. Uniquely, MSU also maintains a robust Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AASN), a two-year "fast-track" degree that allows students to become RNs quickly before potentially transitioning into the university’s 100% online RN-to-BSN or RN-to-MSN tracks. At the graduate level, MSU focuses on primary care through its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) concentration, which includes 540 required clinical hours.
The program is primarily located in the Center for Health, Education, and Research (CHER), a high-tech facility shared with regional healthcare partners. This building houses the Nursing Simulation Lab, where students utilize high-fidelity manikins to practice "real-world" scenarios, from pediatric emergencies to complex adult med-surg cases. Because of its rural location, MSU places a heavy emphasis on regional clinical practicums, sending students to a wide network of healthcare agencies across the Commonwealth. These partnerships ensure students gain experience in both large medical centers and smaller community clinics, preparing them for the specific challenges of Appalachian healthcare. Admission is highly selective; BSN applicants must have 30 completed credit hours with a minimum 3.0 GPA and either an ACT composite of 20 or an 80% total score on the TEAS exam.
Compared to other Kentucky programs, Morehead State is distinguished by its affordability and its student-centered focus, as evidenced by its 2024-25 College of Distinction status for nursing. The university also offers a specialized LPN-to-AASN pathway, giving Licensed Practical Nurses credit for their existing experience to accelerate their path to becoming an RN. With a legacy of excellence in licensure exams, MSU graduates are often among the most recruited in the state, particularly by systems like St. Claire HealthCare and UK HealthCare.
