About VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System

The VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System operates from the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado, on the Anschutz Medical Campus alongside the University of Colorado's health sciences schools and UCHealth's academic hospital. Opened in 2018 after a construction process that drew national scrutiny for cost overruns and delays, the facility replaced the aging Denver VA hospital and stands among the newest in the VA system. Its campus setting supports an affiliation with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and teaching for residents, fellows, and health professions students.

Services include inpatient medical and surgical care, intensive care, surgery, primary care, and a broad range of outpatient specialty clinics, alongside mental and behavioral health programs covering outpatient treatment, PTSD care, substance use treatment, and outreach to veterans experiencing homelessness. A spinal cord injury center provides specialized rehabilitation and long-term care. Community-based outpatient clinics extend access across eastern Colorado and into surrounding states, covering substantial rural distance. Nurses practice across critical care, medical-surgical, perioperative, spinal cord injury, outpatient, and mental health settings in facilities considerably newer than most VA hospitals, with acuity reflecting the system's regional referral role.
