MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, part of the MedStar Health system, operates its New to Practice Nurse Residency Program from its campus in Clinton, Maryland. The hospital-based program is designed for baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses starting their first professional nursing role, helping them build clinical judgment and confidence during the critical first year of practice.
The curriculum pairs hands-on clinical skill development with leadership training and professional growth activities, including opportunities for scholarly research. Residents have access to institutional resources such as dedicated learning spaces, technology, and funding intended to strengthen the residency experience and support new nurses as they establish their practice.
The program earned accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, an achievement MedStar Health highlighted alongside similar recognition for MedStar St. Mary's Hospital. That accreditation reflects strength across program delivery, institutional support, curriculum, and outcomes assessment, and it complements MedStar Southern Maryland's broader nursing career ladder, which includes a professional progression plan for RNs beyond their first year.
