About Union Health

Union Health operates from Terre Haute, Indiana, near the Illinois border, anchored by Union Hospital with additional facilities extending into surrounding counties. As a locally governed nonprofit system, it serves west central Indiana and eastern Illinois, a largely rural region where the nearest larger medical centers sit an hour or more away in Indianapolis. That distance makes Union the practical endpoint for most complex care in the area rather than one option among several, which lifts its acuity above what a hospital of its size in a metropolitan market would typically handle.

Services include emergency care, medical and surgical inpatient units, intensive care, cardiac care including cardiac surgery, cancer treatment, orthopedics and joint replacement, neurosciences, and maternity with newborn intensive care. Nurses practice across critical care, cardiovascular and surgical step-down, medical-surgical, telemetry, perioperative, emergency, oncology, and labor and delivery units, with a patient population carrying the chronic disease and access challenges common across rural Indiana. Graduate medical education gives the system a teaching component, and it serves as a clinical placement site for nursing programs at Indiana State University and other regional schools. Staff often build long tenures in a market this size.
